Around Epping 
 
Located approximately 17 miles north of London, Epping borders ancient Epping Forest and is surrounded by countryside. The origin of the town dates back to permission for a market and two annual fairs being granted by Queen Elizabeth I. The town was known as a travellers resting place and was frequented by the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin.  
With the arrival of the railways and with the added feature of access to the London Underground network, Epping became a commuter town. Whilst the Gothic water tower dating from 1872 and St. Johns Church, built in 1889 allude to this earlier history, the town is well catered for with cinema’s, sports centres and also the Lee Valley Leisure Centre, found nearby at Picketts Lock. 
With a busy shopping centre on High Street, featuring major stores and smaller retailers too, Epping has all the facilities required of a modern town, as well as a general market that’s held each Monday.  
 
Epping Forest
